During K-12, I didn't experience much illness that I needed to be away for weeks at a time. My teachers knew I had CF because my mom wrote them a letter, which I was always embarrassed about. I did have accommodations made in High School gym class. Sometimes my medications interfered with sun exposure so during those times I would sit in the locker room office during PE and count change from the coke machines. It did not affect my PE grade at all.

During college I had the utmost understanding and accommodation when I was ill and couldn't attend classes. I attended UC Davis and we had a Disability Resource Center. (DRC) Once I applied to the DRC, they in turn let me schedule my classes during priority registration enrollment periods with all the athletes and seniors. I was able to first, schedule my classes around my treatments and second they gave accommodation while I was in the hospital.

At UC Davis, there was this on campus business called Classical Notes. Basically this business employed straight A student note takers for all the larger classes on campus. Then in turn, Classical Notes sold the notes to anyone willing to buy them. But because I was enrolled with the DRC I got these notes for free, the DRC paid for them. Also, since I was in smaller classes as my courses progressed there often wasn't a Classical Note taker and the DRC would hire one of my classmates to take notes for me. Again, all for free to me.

In addition to notes from lectures any time spent away from class and/or during midterms was mediated by the DRC if need be between me and the professor. I actually never had an issue and didn't need the DRC's help in re-scheduling mid terms. Sometimes I had to take missed exams, other times my grade was weighted more heavily on the exams I could take and I just skipped some tests. My professors at UC Davis were always very understanding.

I hope this helps.
