The Databrick 3U delivers 1TB of usable RAID 5 storage for under $5K and is fully compatible with Linux, FreeBSD and Windows.   JBOD, RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5 and RAID 10 (0+1) are supported. All drives are hot swappable. A hot spare is supported with automatic RAID rebuild in the event of a disk failure. Hot swap redundant power supplies are optional. Off site management and configuration tools are available and the system can be configured to alert a systems administrator in the event of a disk failure. The Databrick uses a unique design by harnessing the low cost of IDE drives and effectively using them as SCSI drives. The featured 3ware 7850 series RAID controller is the fastest IDE RAID controller on the market. The performance is exceptional because the RAID driver is implemented as a SCSI device driver, not as an IDE device driver. Key SCSI features are extant including tag queuing which is critical to performance. Lack of support for SCSI "disconnect" and through-put problems that exist in other IDE RAID solutions are bypassed because each IDE disk is on its own dedicated channel. Performance of the 3WARE controller is far beyond that of any other product we have auditioned. We use a dual processor configuration allowing one CPU to handle the RAID load while a second CPU handles network I/O and other system processes. 

This sample quote features dual PIII CPUs running at 1GHz and 512MB of SDRAM in a compact 3U (5.25" tall) rack mount server chassis. This price includes a CD-ROM and Floppy, Intel Ethernet and SIS video. The 3U system supports from one to none hot swap IDE drives. A 4U version supports up to 16 hot swap drives. A 2U version supports up to eight fixed drives. A tower version supports up to eight drives. We can also build these in a SCSI version.

Server 4OPT: Quad Opteron Server

The quad processor Opteron server offers up to four 64-bit Opteron CPUs, dual U320 SCSI, up to 64GB of 333MHz DDR RAM, 4 hot swap SCA drive bays, dual gigabit Ethernet, video and redundant hot swap power supplies in a 4U rack mount enclosure with CD and floppy. 

Options:

External Tower SCSI RAID Array

This is a complete external high performance RAID solution that scales up to 1.6TBs in a tower chassis. This RAID features hot swappable drives and two hot swap redundant power supplies. Less expensive versions featuring fixed drives and a single fixed power supply are also available. Up to nine drives are supported. Prices listed includes six Ultra160 18GB hard disks pre-configured in a hardware RAID array. Larger drive options are available upon request. Both Ultra160 SCSI and Fiber versions are offered. This quote includes an IBM/Mylex PCI RAID controller although we offer a wide array of RAID controllers from various vendors with PCI, Ultra160 SCSI or Fibre interfaces. As quoted the host system must have a free PCI slot for the PCI RAID controller card and be running Linux, FreeBSD, Windows NT/2000, NetWare or SCO Unix. Ask for compatible options for any other operating systems. Multiple RAID RS units may be connected to the same computer for added capacity. Arrays can be configured with remote administration and configuration as well as automatic notification and automatic drive replacement and RAID rebuild in the event of a disk failure.

This system includes 10 /100 / 1000 Gigabit Ethernet, USB 2.0, IEEE 1394 Firewire, Serial-ATA (SATA), and 8X AGP.

However, we build these systems per your specifications. You may wish to choose other components. Let us know and we'll build it for you.

Options:

- Choice of video cards - the Matrox G550 is very nice for 2D work and supports two monitors. However, for 3D work you may prefer an ATI Radeon or a nVidia GeForce FX video card.

- 20GB - 250GB IDE hard drive sizes.

- Your choice of chassis: The Lian-Li Aluminum chassis quoted is very nice. The CoolerMaster Aluminum chassis are a tad more expensive. We also have much cheaper chassis/power supply options that are good quality like InWin. See our chassis page. 

- Your choice of power supply. The Zippy/Emacs AP2 series is the ultimate in high end, reliable power. However, we have less expensive models such as SPI.

- Add or subtract DVD-ROM, CD-RW, backup devices, etc. For Example a Toshiba SDR-5002 DVD-R/RW, CD-R/RW drive.

- Other optional PCI cards such as Creative Labs Audigy2 or M-Audio (Midiman Audio) Stereophile quality Revolution audio card.
