We offer a wide variety of Pentium Based Internet Servers, Gateways and WWW Servers for prospective Internet Service Providers (ISP's):
The Net Express ISP Software Package, Ver. 2.2.X, is a complete Suite of ISP Services optimized for performance and security. The software is shipped with all the TCP/IP, DNS, mail, news, Radius, WWW and FTP services custom configured for your site and ready to run.
The Net Express ISP Software Package may be ordered simply by filling out the questionnaire at the end of this form and e-mailing it in along with your order form. The whole package will be delivered via Federal Express pre-installed on the hardware outlined below. Allow approximately 12 days for your package to arrive. After you are online we will log into your ISP servers and make certain everything is running. The total cost for this service is $ 1500 plus the cost of hardware you choose and shipping. We outline our suggested hardware below. However, you may choose to change this configuration. Technical Support is limited to the pre-purchase questions and installation. Our technicians will make sure you get up and running on line. Additional Technical Support is available from a qualified technician for $ 125 per hour.

The domain name, class C license and DNS services are free and easy to obtain. There is a fee for the T1 line and Internet access. We will explain how you can setup these services.
Internet Servers |
ISP's generally spend thousands of dollars on consultants when they first get setup. Our aim is to get you up and running with a pre- tested $1,500 software package plus hardware.
An ISP has three computers. One computer handles the mail, FTP, Radius and DNS and may handle shell accounts. The second computer is a World Wide Web Server. The third handles the news. These three computers are connected by cable on a Local Area Network (LAN). The LAN cable also attaches to a forth device called a terminal server/router. This is a small box with a lot of ports on it. The terminal server is a 386 computer with many serial ports. Each serial port connects to a modem. Each modem connects to a separate phone line. In the same box as the terminal Server you'll have a router. (Some folks opt to buy a router in a separate box). The router acts as a traffic cop. It decides which data will stay on your LAN and which data will be forwarded to the Internet. Therefore the router is connected both to your LAN and the Internet. A cable runs from the router to a CSU/DSU. The CSU/DSU is in turn connected to your T1 line which extends to the Internet. The CSU/DSU translates your LAN data into Internet data.

From these results we can see that Linux is a very efficient OS. Scores for Linux on the Pentium 133 were nearly as fast as Solaris 2.5 on a 167MHz Sparc Ultra or a 200MHz Pentium Pro and at a fraction of the cost. Using Linux on a Pentium Pro you can reliably server over 2,000 users. Our Linux/Apache based WWW servers have achieved over one million hits per day and our news servers are ranked among the top 100 fastest in the world.

Mail/FTP/DNS/Radius Server |
For the mail server, we suggest the following base system. This system will handle your mail, FTP, telnet, DNS and Radius. With a WWW Server and a news server, you can handle over 2,000 users on PPP or SLIP. We suggest you only offer SLIP or PPP and not shell access. Allowing shell access requires about 4MB's of RAM per user and shell access is a major security hole. The mail server comes equipped with a 4mm DAT (Digital Audio Tape) drive to backup all the hard drives on your network onto 4mm DAT tapes via NFS.

News Server |
For a news server, we suggest the following base system which includes three BusLogic SCSI Controllers and three hard drives for improved I/O. Your news server will be your hardest working machine and the majority of this work will be in disk I/O.. The most efficient way to process news is to split the processing tasks over three separate channels with three or more spindles. This way these processes can go on in parallel. We suggest one controller and one hard drive for each of these tasks:
a) 4GB hard drive for Linux OS and news history files
b) 9GB hard drive for the news overview files
c) 9GB hard drive for the news hierarchy
One 9GB news hierarchy drive can hold about one day of news. How much news you receive will vary greatly depending on where you get your news feed. The overview file drive should be at least 25% of the capacity of the news hierarchy drive. The news server below can serve over 2,000 users as shown. This news server design is among the fastest on the market and has made the top 100 list for total news served. Note that the total volume of news is growing. Therefore more disk space may be required in the future or you may have to expire news more rapidly. If you plan to add more disk space you should consider buying this news server with the 11 bay chassis option.
Your news feed will probably use about a third of a T1 if you have a good news feed. If you decide the overhead is too high, you may want to just lease a news service from another provider. Your clients can read news from another provider upstream. This saves the the expense of the news server, the administration of the news server and all the associated T1 bandwidth.

This is our suggested WWW server configuration. We have run this system with well over a million hits per day. This should be able to handle all your personal WWW accounts. However, many ISP's make additional money by installing and co-locating dedicated commercial WWW servers. Indeed, WWW co-location is a major money maker.

You will also need to budget funds for your T1 line and modem lines. This price does not include a cabinet. We can provide cabinets or you can make your own rack (or simply use a table).
Note this quote is for 30 modems running at 33.6bps max. For each additional modem add $2625 per 30 port terminal server, $180 per modem and $5 per modem cable. Rack mount modem units are also available.
We can also accommodate ISDN or 56K access. 56K access requires a terminal server with 56K integrated digital modems. We also offer this option in one small rack mount unit, the Livingston (Lucent Technologies/Bell Labs) Port Master 3 2T Digital Access Server (PM3-2T) which can accommodate from eight to 48 56K or ISDN lines. The PM3-2T accepts up to six cards. Each card includes either eight or ten 56K digital modems. For each 24 56K modems one channelized T1 line must be brought in to carry the incoming calls. This is known as "trunk side termination." So for 48 modems, two channelized T1's would be required for incoming lines. Alternately 23 64K ISDN lines can be accommodated per PRI. A sample quote including a PM3-2T with 48 56K digital modems is below. However, you may wish to start with fewer modems and add cards as you need them.

There are no discounts nor hidden fees (Except Net30 PO prices which are 3% higher). You can buy either parts or a whole system. Watch Out! |
Make certain your service provider does not change your IP numbers on you. If they do we'll have to reconfigure the whole kit-and-caboodle. To do this we'll need to make up a custom set of installation disks to reconfigure your system. If they change IP numbers within 30 days of the time we get your IP information, we'll charge $ 250 to make up a set of these custom disks. After 30 days we will charge by the hour. Therefore, it's a good idea to tell you service provider that you'll charge them $ 250 if they break their contract and change your IP numbers on you.
One last warning. You should plug in your ISP setup and confirm that it's working before you start to change any settings. That way you'll be able to confirm that everything is in good working order when you start. If you reconfigure it before getting online you could do serious damage and we will have to charge by the hour to undo that damage.
