How not to build a better deck
Untreated Douglas fir deck joists are susceptible to decay or rot. The preferred method is to use pressure treated - decay resistant lumber, or to apply a flashing material on the top surfaces of the joists. There is also no visible metal or other flashing to prevent water entry and damage at the connection between the deck and house. The ledger board should be securely fastened to the building framing.
