Rooky the Unforgettable
by Oanh Hoang
"Kaboom!" Tobey pulled the door to his room shut, as he ran out his room and ran down the 15-step stair to the first floor of his house. When he reached the last step he ran to the kitchen but before he reached the kitchen he passed the wall that separated the living room from the dining room, the kitchen and t.v room.
Tobey ran down the stairs so fast when he heard his dog Rooky barking, which meant that he was either hungry or needed to go to the restroom. When he got into the kitchen he took a look at the clock to see what time it was, he saw that it was1: 34, and was time for Rooky to eat his first meal of the day, so Tobey figured that he was hungry.
"Hello my little puppy, what do you want now?
`Tobey pretends to ask, as if he didn't know what Rooky really wanted.
When Rooky saw his master who had dark brown hair, and was wearing a pair of jeans, and a white T-shirt, he stopped winding and started jumping for joy.
Then Tobey stepped closer to the cage to let his dog out. He took the key that hung on the kitchen wall, and slipped it into the hole on the lock. The lock popped open, then the silver gate on the white cage swung open and Rooky ran out of it.
Then Tobey bent over and grabbed onto the blue collar that Rooky wore around his neck and softly pulled him outside.
Once Rooky was outside, Tobey went back into the
kitchen, took out a bowl with Rooky's name printed on it, poured some dog
food in it and gave it to Rooky to eat.
As Rooky ate, Tobey sat next to him, hugging and petting his coffee colored fur on his back. Then he said, "I can't imagine not having you around."As he hugged Rooky even tighter.
After Rooky ate Tobey gave him a bath and took him out for a walk.
After walking past 2 stop signs, they made a right turn, then past another 2 stop signs, and then they were at the park so they decided to stop and play.
They played frisbee for about 10 minutes then they heard music like an ice cream truck, Tobey looked around because he was craving for ice cream. But instead of seeing an ice cream truck he saw an oval shaped truck. Then his hope dropped because it wasn't what he had wanted it to be.
He couldn't really tell what it was until it past by him, then the smell came to him, it smelled very familiar like hot dog, but he wasn't sure. He decided to look at it again, this time he saw something that slipped his eyes before, [he didn't see it before] he saw that on the roof of the car there was a huge, red and plastic hot dog. Then he realised that it was a hot dog truck.
Then Tobey quickly turned his head over to Rooky. Now Rooky had his tongue sticking out and was drewling. It occurred to Tobey that Rooky had smelled the hot dog truck to.
Tobey was getting real scared that Rooky was going to start running after it, because he remembered how every Tuesday when Tobey and his parents eat hot dog for lunch, Rooky would lay under the table waiting for left overs. Unlike all the other days when he would be wondering around. Rooky was bent down low and was getting ready to "charge." In other words, he was getting ready to chase something; in this case it would be the hot dog truck that Rooky was getting ready to chase.
"Ruff-ruff," Rooky started barking and Tobey saw him starting to run after the hot dog truck. Tobey was about to run after him but he saw that there was too much cars coming up the road, he had to thins quick so he decided to run after Rooky any ways even though he knew that it was dangerous.
Tobey finally caught up to Rooky. The only thing left to do was to get a hold of Rookie's leash, so he bent down. "Got yaw now!"He yelled as he grabbed on to the leash as tight as possible.
He thought that he could stop Rooky, but it turned the other way around. The dog was to strong for Tobey, he was getting pulled so fast that he lost his balance and breath so he let the leash go and claps on the ground with his face in the air.
He lay in pain for about two minute then he heard some cars honking and then a "BOOM."
He quickly sat up and started looking around. Rooky was nowhere to be seen. Then Tobey stood up and started looking around him. All of a sudden he stopped looking around and stared at an object in the middle of the street that wasn't there before.
Then he started walking towards the strange object, as he got closer to it he saw that it was brown and was surrounded by some kind of red liquid.
"Rooky, where are you? I know you're here somewhere, so come out please, I'll give you some hot dog as soon as we get home!" Tobey yelled as he got closer and closer to the strange object.
"NO!" he shouted as soon as he reached the object as he kneeled
down by it and started to cry. Then he lifted his hands covered his face
and laid next to his dead dog crying.
As Tobey lay crying there were all kinds of honking going on because everyone that past by Tobey and his dead dog would honk trying to tell them to move.
Tobey cried for about five minutes before he lifted his head and looked at the seven-eleven store behind him. He decided to go call his parents to tell them had happened, but also to tell them to come pick him up because he had no strength to carry the heavy dog home by himself.
Before he went he decided to carry the dog
On to the sidewalk before someone ran him over again, and smashed him flat.
He lifted his dog from the ground and carried him over to the sidewalk with tears rolling down his cheeks and blood dripping down from his dead dog. He lifted Rooky of the ground for about ten- seconds then he got tried because, as he said, Rooky was to heavy for him to carry. So he let his dog back on the ground and dragged him the rest of the way. Finally he got to where he wanted to leave Rooky. Tobey left Rooky lying on the grass under a rain-tree and went to call his parents on the public phone at seven- eleven.
About five minutes after he called his parents and had gone back to his dog who was still laying on the grass, a white Acura Legend pulled over by the sidewalk where Tobey was sitting. It had a sunroof and tinted windows. There were two people sitting in the car and they were Tobey's parents.
"Tobey, are you ok?" his mom asked as soon as she saw his hands all red with Rookys blood. Her hands were clutched together tightly and placed in her knee length red dress. She walked over to Tobey with the wind blowing her curly brown hair and eyes.
"I'm fine mom." Tobey answered his mom's question, as he slowly got back on his feet and walked over to his parents.
Tobey's dad started looking around trying to find an unfamiliar person standing around some- where, but isn't. Then he asked, "Why are you alone? Where's the driver?"
"The person you're trying to fine, hit and ran. If I ever fine out who hit Rooky, I'll make them pay a really big price that will make him hope he had paid attention to the road." Tobey said to his dad, and looked down at Rooky and promised.
"Well then, did you get the license plate number? Or the kind of car he or she was driving? Or even the color and kind of car?" Tobey's dad asked patiently for an answer.
"Sorry, but no."Tobey said shaking his head.
His dad looked at him with a ridiculous look and his hand pressed against his waste and said, "Well then, how are you planning to find the person?"
"I don't know but I will someday, I hope." Tobey hoped looking back up at his dad.
After standing, starring at Rooky and talking, Tobey's dad suggested that they carry Rooky into the trunk of the car and bring him home to bury. So then Tobey and his dad walked over to the grass where Rooky laid, and Tobey picked up the 2 back legs as his dad picked up the front. Then they carried him over to the trunk that Tobey's mom just popped open.
After putting Rooky in the car, they all got into the car and started home. On their way home, Tobey sat on the creamed-leathered chair staring out the window at another kid walking his dog.
They got home and parked the car in front of the garage
then they all got out. Tobey and his dad did the same thing they did before
except this time they took Rooky out of it instead of putting him in it.
Then Mrs. Henderson said that she was going to open the front door, but her husband told her not to, because if they carried the dog through the front door to the backyard then blood might drip all over the carpet. Instead Mrs. Henderson went and opened the gate that was the entrance to the backyard.
The gate opened and they all slowly walked down the corridor, or should I say the aisle, on the right was a wooden fence that separated the neighbour's house from theirs. To the left of them was the wall of the house. Ones they got to the end of the corridor they would be at the garden where Tobeys mom planted her flowers.
"Let's bring Rooky over to the dirt." Mr. Henderson suggested as he led Tobey over to it.
After they got over to where they planned to bury Rooky, Mr. Henderson picked up the shovel and stucked it in the ground while saying, "Tobey go in the house and get me a box with a cap, and remember to put a towel or a cloth in it to put Rooky in. While I start digging."
Then Tobey ran in the house through the back door and down the garage. While he was looking for the box his mom was outside watering the dirt so it would be easier to dig.
After about five minutes Tobey came running back out the back door with a brown cardboard box in his hand that used to be full of tomatoes, in his hand ho also held a white bathtowel.
"It's about time you got the box, now bring it over here." Tobey's dad said as soon as he saw Tobey. So Tobey ran over to his dad who was sitting by the dead bloody dog. When Tobey got to his dad, his dad grabbed the towel out of his hand and laid it in the box. Then they carried the dog into the box and took the box over to the hole that Tobey's dad was halfway done digging.
" Leave it here for now until I'm done digging." Tobey's dad said, so Tobey left the box on the ground, and went in the house. He never came back out to finish burying the dog.
That night he didn't even come down for dinner, so his mom brought some food up to his room. He ate in sorrow as he looked through the album that was full of pictures of him, his parents and his dog/
He stared at each picture for five minutes before he turned to the next. The most unusual thing about that night was, Tobey only ate half of his dinner. It was so unusual because usually he would eat all his dinner with not even a speck left over.
"Tobey, are you ok?" his mom asked in amazement with her eyes wide open staring at the tray with a plate of left over that Tobey didn't eat as she slowly walked out the door, waiting for an answer that Tobey never gave.
For the next two days Tobey did the same thing, he spent most his time in his room and would only come down when his parents called him or when it was time for dinner. He didn't even step a foot outside, instead he would sit in his room staring out the window.
On the third day Mr. and Mrs. Henderson had a wedding to attend, they had ask Tobey if he wanted to go, but he was still to depressed to get out of the house.
That morning when his parents weren't home, he went downstairs to the kitchen to find something to eat, "Good doggy doggy."Tobey smiled and said as soon as he saw the morning newspaper lying on the counter by the oven, he thought his dog brought it in.
After that he opened the coboard also by the oven and took out a bowl with his dog name engraved in it. Then he ran over to the sink and opened the coboard under it and took out a can of dog food, then he poured it into the bowl.
After that he took the bowl outside and placed it where Rooky used to stand and eat. Then he went back into the house.
"Good dog, come on Rooky, go eat your breakfast." Said Tobey as he did the same thing that morning before Rooky died which was opening the cage and letting Rooky out of it. The only difference this time was nothing actually came out of the cage.
After feeding his imaginary dog he went and found some food for himself. He ate for about 30 minutes then he went outside to play. He picked up the frisby and threw it, "Go get it Rooky!"He yelled as it went flying in the air. Then he went running after it, after about two minutes of standing staring at it and waiting for his so-called dog to bring it back to him. He did the same thing over and over for about 20 minutes then he went in the house to rest and watch TV.
He sat on the couch, watching t.v and stroking the fur on his imaginary dog that was supposed to be sitting by the couch next to him.
That night, before his parents got home, he went up his room and looked through his album for the fourth time, but this time with Rooky supposedly.
"Remember this Rooky? This was on my 8th birthday, when we went to Yosemite National Park to camp out." Tobey reminded "Rooky"as he looked at a picture of him [Tobey] throwing Rooky a marshmallow at a campfire in front Tobey's navy blue tent.
"Eeeeeeek" the downstairs front door squeaked open as Tobey's parents got home. They had brought him some food, so Mrs. Henderson decided to bring it up for him so he could eat, but also to see how he was doing.
She was about to knock on the door but froze when she heard Tobey yelling, "Stop! Bad dog, that's not food, let it go now!"She thought he got himself a new dog without telling them, so she finally knocked on the door.
"Tobey you're still up? What's going on? Who are you talkingto?"His mom asked.
"Mom, dad, you're home? It's Rooky, he's back."Tobey said cheerfully as he walked over to the door to open it.
Mr. Henderson thought something was wrong when he heard his wife asking Tobey what was wrong so he went up to her. "Hi mom and dad, how was the wedding?"Tobey asked smiling at his parents. His parents looked at each other then back at Tobey in amazement because he was smiling again.
Then Mrs. Henderson stepped into Tobey's room and started looking around waiting to be surprised by a new dog, but she stepped back outside about 3 minutes later with a confused because there was no sign of any new dog. Her forehead was wrinkled and she scratched her head.
"What's wrong honey?" Mr. Henderson asked his wife, but she ignored him and started walking towards her room as she handed her husband the bag of food that they bought home for Tobey. After that he decided to go see what had happened, so he handed his son the bag of food and followed his wife into the room. Ones again he ask her what was wrong, this time she answered, she told him what she had heard Tobey saying when she went up to give him his food.
"Are you sure she said that?" he asked in shock.
"Yes, I'm positive." His wife, Mrs. Henderson assured him.
"Fine, I'll talk to him tomorrow then."Mr. Henderson said, then they went to bed.
"Hey Tobey, where are you off to?" Mr. Henderson asks as soon as he saw his son come running down the stairs, in a pair of blue shoes cap, a pair of blue jeans and a t-shirt.
"Hi mom, hi dad I'm gonna take Rooky out for a walk." Tobey said with a bright smile on his face.
"What did I tell you?"Mrs. Henderson whispered to her husband as she handed him the plate of pancakes. "I think it's a good time to talk to him now."She patted him on the shoulder and left.
"Tobey, what do you mean you're taking Rooky out for a walk?" dad Tobey's dad asked.
"Rooky, don't you remember dad? He's my and dog, and my best friend." Tobey turned to his dad and reminded.
"Yes, of course, I know who Rooky is, but he's dead."
"Don't say that, he's not dead. In fact, he's standing right next to me!" Tobey yelled, as he knelt down and started petting it.
Tobey's dad got so mad, he stood up off his chair and said, "I know you love him, but you've got to get him out of your mind, believe me he's dead!"
A drop tear rolled down Tobey's cheeks, and then he stood up. "No, no, no he's not dead, don't say that!"He started stomping his feet and jumping up and down, then more tears started rolling down his cheeks. He ran upstairs to his room and slammed the door.
"I don't know what's gone over him." Mr. Henderson said to his wife.
"I think the album he has is what's keeping him from forgetting Rooky because I always see him looking through it." Mrs. Henderson said thoughtfully.
"Well, if that's the problem then we should get rid of it."Her husband planned.
"Are you sure we should do that? You know how boys
are, they don't like others touching their stuffs." Mrs. Henderson said
unsure.
"Well, is there anything else we can do?" Mr. Henderson said shaking his head.
Mr. Henderson nodded to herself and said to her husband, "Ok, how are you planning to take it? He always in his room."
"We'll find a chance when he's down here watching TV or doing something else, then you could pretend to go up his room and clean it, and you could use that chance to find the album, take it and hide it."He explained.
Mrs. Henderson looked down at the floor and thought to herself for a minute, then she looked back up at her husband and asked, "Why don't you just asked him for it instead of sneaking around and trying to take it?"
" You really think he's gonna let us take it just like that? Rooky and the album are both really important to him." Mr. Henderson gave his wife a think-before-you- talk look.
Then the confused look on Mrs. Henderson's face disappeared and turned into an understanding one. She nodded and went back to doing what she was doing before.
That night before dinner, Tobey came down to the tv room to watch tv. Mrs. Henderson thought it was a good time to go find the album because she was done cooking dinner and had nothing else to do.
She crept up the stairs with a basket in her hand pretending to go get some dirty clothes to wash. She went up the stairs without Tobey even knowing it, which was part of her plan. She got to his room and quietly closed the door.
The first thing she did was made his bed so if he came up he would believe that she was cleaning his room. Then she went over to the desk that he did his homework on and opened the drawers to check if the album was in there. She opened the first drawer but saw no sign of any album, then she opened the second one but still saw none.
Then she decided to look in his clothe drawers that stood next to his bed. She opened the first drawer but saw no album, only jeans. After that she opened the one under it and tooked out a blue Star-Wars album that laid under a pile of shirts.
After looking and finding it, she threw it in the basket and piled on top of it Tobey's dirty laundry. Then she slowly and quietly opened the door and went into her own room. When she got in the room she saw her husband and gave him the album.
When Mr. Henderson saw his wife holding the album that he gave to Tobey on his 8th birthday he grabbed it and looked through it, then he said "looked at all these pictures of Rooky, now I won't have to wonder why it's so hard for Tobey to forget him." Then he slipped it under his king-size bed.
Then Mrs. Henderson went back down stair to set up the dinner table. After it was set Tobey and his dad came down, Tobey sat down when he saw his mom already sitting and waiting. But before Mr. Henderson sat down, he went over to his wife and told her to try and remind Tobey that Rooky was dead.
Then Mr. Henderson looked at her husband with an "are you sure that will help" look and Mr. Henderson nodded.
"Poor, poor Rooky he had to die at such an early age. I still remember the day when we saw him laying on the green grass with blood surrounding him." Mrs. Henderson started to say as she picked up her fork and started eating.
"You remember when he died? Well, I remember the first day we got him. He was so small; he could fit on the palm of both my hands put together. He had light brown fur that got darker and darker each day. Oh I miss that little dog." Tobey's dad started to say after Mrs. Henderson stopped.
"Mom and dad you have bad memory, I think you're talking about our first dog Sassy, because Rooky is laying under the table next to my feet, he's not dead."Tobeys said giving his parents a ridiculous smile and continued eating.
After eating, they all helped clean the table and washed the dishes. Then Tobey's dad went to wash the news and Tobey went up to his room while Mrs. Henderson dried the dishes.
Tobey's parents continued doing what they started for about 15 minutes then Mrs. Henderson heard Tobey stomping down the stairs, so she ran over to her husband drying her hand on the towel she held. Then she asked, " Tobey, what's wrong?" once she saw him.
"Where is my picture album?" Tobey asked in a loud voice.
"What do you mean? Isn't it where you always leave it? Go look again."
"Stop playing around I know you have it. I really need it." He begged, looking straight at his parents.
"Why do you need it so bad?" his mom questioned.
"We only took it because we thought it would be best for you, and we burned it." Said Tobey's dad as he turned away and continued watching the news.
After that Tobey's mom went over to Tobey and patted him on the shoulder, meaning for him to go back up stairs. Then she went over and joined her husband who was watching the news.
Tobey did as he mom wish he went up stairs and into his room. Then he grabbed a stack of papers some crayons and some writing utensils like pens and pencils. Then he started drawing, he drew picture of himself, his parents but mostly his dog, and he then colored it.
He drew and drew. And continued drawing until it pass his bedtime when his mom came up to tell him to turn off the light. He did as he was told but continued drawing in the dim light of his night light.
The next morning Tobey came running down the stairs
with a blue folder in his hand, " Tobey What's wrong? How come you're all
pale and green? Look at the bags under your eyes." His mom complain as Tobey
came down the stairs looking like he hasn't had any sleep at all. She then
put her hands on his forehead to see if it was hot because he might be sick,
to her surprise it was not hot.
"Mom, I'm fine." Tobey said, " But guess what? I got myself a whole new album." He then handed his mom the blue folder.
She looked through the folder and saw that it was full of pictures that Tobey had drawn. " When did you draw this? How come I've never seen it before." She asked closing it.
"How could I show it before when I only started drawing it last night and I actually finish drawing it too." Then he smiled proudly and took the folder to go show his dad.
After showing his dad who was up stairs writing, he ran back down stair to admire it himself. Then Mrs. Henderson ran up to her rooms to talk to her husband and see if they should give Tobey back his real album. After about 5 minute of talking, they came to a conclusion that they should return Tobey album back to him because he just prove to them that his album was really important to him.
So Mr. Henderson took the album out from under his bed and went down stairs with Mrs. Henderson. "Here Tobey you can have your album back, I never burned it it's been under my bed," said Tobey's dad with a guilty look on his face.
Tobey quickly grabbed the album and looked through it, then as he close it, he slowly look up at his parent and asked, "Why did you lie to me? Why did you take it anyways?"
"We only did it because we thought it might helped you forget about Rookey. We see you looking through it all the time." His mom explained apologetically.
Then Tobey and his dad both went up to their room. Mr. Henderson went to take a nap and Tobey, of course, started looking through his album just like the day when his dog died, except that night he did come down for dinner.
Weeks after weeks kept passing, Tobey's parents would often try to remind him that Rooky was dead, but they would usually end up getting into arguments and getting mad at one another.
Finally after about 3 weeks of staying in the house, Tobey decided to go out for a walk to get some fresh air. He wore on his Nike blue windbreaker and went out the door, he went back to the park where Rooky was killed.
He walked about 1/5 the way and all of a sudden he stopped, he didn't even know why he stopped, but he did know that something was missing, so he started walking back home.
First he went through the front door of the house, then he zoomed through the kitchen and went over to Rooky's old cage. After that he took the key to open the cage and took out the blue leash laying in it. Then he went back out the front door and started walking again.
He walked dragging the leash behind him for about 10 minutes then he finally arrived at the park where he and Rooky used to play frisbee at. This time instead of going over to the grass to play frisbee, he ran over to the swing and sat on one of it, then he started swinging himself on it.
He swung on the swing for a few minutes then again he heard something that sounded like an ice cream truck, he quickly looked from side to side and front to back to see what it really was, "Ruff-ruff-ruff!" he heard a dog barking.
"No!No! Don't run it's an ice cream truck not a hot dog truck. Stop Rooky!" Tobey screamed as he jumped off the swing that was still swinging. "Boom" he landed on his knee on the rough cement, his knee got scrape and was bleeding, but he didn't even noticed it. He quickly got back on his feet and ran over to a brown dog standing by a stop sign barking. He hugged it and grabbed onto the collar around its neck.
"Excuse me?"He heard someone ask, so he looked up to see who it was. The bright yellow sun shined in his eyes, it was hard for him o see who it was, but he could tell that she had on a blue pair of shorts, a white t-shirt and she had layered hair. She looked down at him with her brown eyes, and confused wrinkles on her forehead.
"Oh, I'm sorry, I thought this was my dog."Tobey apologised as he stood up straight, clapping his hands together trying to get rid of the dirt. "That's okay, but are you alright?"She asked looking down at his knees and biting her lips like she was the one in pain.
"What do you mean?" Tobey asked her back because he didn't understand her question, that's because he had no idea he was even bleeding.
"Your knees look like it's bleeding." She explained, which made him look down at his knees and he finally realised he was bleeding.
"I'm fine, thanks for warning me and worrying."He smiled then turned away and started walking away limping. She followed him as he walked back to his swing.
She sat on the swing next to him with her dog tied to the leg of the slide watching her.
"Where's your dog?"She asked curiously. She was also trying to get a conversation started.
"Oh, he's at home." Tobey answered. They sat and talked for about 10 minutes then Tobey said he had to go home. So they said bye to each other and went home. Tobey went back the way he came.
Tobey walked as he kept turning back to see the girl with the dog walking behind him. He thought she was going to sooner or later turn and walk another way. He started to feel scared when he saw her still following him after he got to the 2nd stop sign before he reached his house, so he decided to turn around and ask. He turned and started walking towards her, "Excuse me, why are you following me to my house?" he ask with his eyebrows up high, his eyes wide open and his hands on his hip.
" What makes you think I'm following you?"She asked with a questioning look on her face and she started putting her hands on her hip.
"Why are you always behind me everytime I turn around?" he asked some more.
"Maybe because I'm trying to go home, to my own house."Someones question finally got answered.
"Where do you live?"He asked.
"I live in the last house on Taylor Av., which is two stop signs away from here." She answered annoyingly as she removed her hands from her hip.
"Oh, what a coincidence I live on that street to." He finally stopped asking questions and smiled, then he started to take his hands off his hips. After that he offered to take her home.
After another 5 minutes of walking they finally arrived at her house. "I've been wondering, what's that thing you have in your hand? It looks like a dog collar." She asked walking through the fence.
"It is a dog collar, and it belongs to my dog." He answered, lifting it up so she could see.
Then before went in her house she said,"I would like to meet Rooky someday." And she disappeared into her house as the door closed.
"You are welcome to any time. You know where I live, I hope you remember that house I showed you on our way here."Tobey wished as he started walking away, and went home.
The rest of the day Tobey was actually happy because for ones he had a true friend. The whole day he didn't even take his album out to look at, but the best of all was he and his parents could talk but not about Rooky.
After breakfast the next day, Mrs. Henderson heard someone knocking at the door, so she went and opened it. Behind the door was the same girl that Tobey met at the park yesterday morning. "May I asked, who you are looking for?" Mrs. Henderson asked in shock because she thought had caused trouble.
Then all of a sudden Tobey came running down the stairs yelling to his mom, "I think she's looking for me!"
"Oh hi."The girl behind the door said ones she saw Tobey.
"Come on in."He invited as soon as he got to the door. After she got in, he closed the door and said, "Here let me introduce you to my mom. Mom this is"
"I'm Katy." she interrupted because she remembered she had never told him her name. Then she gave Mrs. Henderson a polite smile and turned over to Tobey, then she said, "I wanted to come see Rooky. Where is he?"
"Here, let me take you out to the backyard, he's probably out there." Then Tobey started walking her through the kitchen and to the backdoor. After that he opened the door and they both stepped outside. "Look, he's right over there, do you see him?" Tobey pointed to the grass.
"No, where?"She wrinkled her forehead. Then she started walking towards the grass to where Tobey was pointing, but she still didn't see anything so she told him, "I still don't see him." And she started turning her head from side to side.
"Are you blind or what? He's right in front of you." Tobey looked at her as if she was crazy.
Then all of a sudden a breeze of wind flew past them and she shivered. After that she shrugged her shoulders and thought to herself, "Is he crazy?" then she went back n the house without saying another word. After she got in the house, she closed the door and stood staring out at Tobey petting his so-called dog, and throwing the frisbee back and fourth.
She started getting even more confused then before. Mrs. Henderson saw Katy staring out the window, so she went up to her and told her, "Don't be scared, he's been like that since his dog died." Then she patted Katy on the shoulder.
"You mean Rooky is dead? How come he never told me about it?" Katy asked and looked at Mrs. Henderson.
"That's because he doesn't believe his dog is dead. You know Rooky was Tobey's best friend. He never really had any in school." Mrs. Henderson explained. Then she told Katy everything they've tried to do, she also told the results of everything they've tried. Mrs. Henderson didn't only tell her what they tried to do, but she also told Katy about Tobeys weird behaviours. Then she concluded her story by asking, "Katy do you have any suggestion?"
"Well, not yet, but I'll think about it. Now
I have to go." Katy smiled and took a last look out the window then walked
back to the front door, where she came in from. Mrs. Henderson escorted her
out and closed the door.
The next morning Katy stopped by Tobey's house again. She came at the same time she did the morning before, "Oh, it's you again, are you looking for Tobey?" Tobey's mom asked as she opened the door for Katy this time.
"Oh no, actually I came to talk to you about what you asked me yesterday before I left." Katy corrected Mrs. Henderson.
"Well, then come on in." Mrs. Henderson invited her
into the house. Katy went through the door and walked over to the couch in
the living room. "Have a seat, would you like something to drink?" she
asked.
"Oh, no thanks I've had plenty at home," Katy refused.
"What was it you came to talk about again?" Mrs. Henderson said taking a seat next to Katy.
"Remember yesterday, you asked if I had any suggestion to stop Tobey's weird behaviour?" Katy reminded and Mrs. Henderson nodded.
"I think the best thing to do is to get Tobey a replacement, and that replacement can be a new dog. I remember you telling me that Rooky was Tobey's best friend, and Tobey just lost his best friend, which means he need to make a new best friend, and you can't go out and tell some boy to be his best friend, so in this case, it's easier to get Tobey a new dog." Katy explained to Mrs. Henderson her plan.
"I never thought of that before. You know how me and Mr. Henderson don't like dog. The only Reason we got him Rooky was because he kept begging us and we felt sorry for him because he always seemed so lonely." Mrs. Henderson said d to Katy and looked up at her husband who was coming down the stairs.
Then ones again Mrs. Henderson escorted her out. "What do you think of her idea?" Mrs. Henderson asked her husband as she turned around after closing the door for Katy.
"I agree with her, lets go now since Tobey is still sleeping. So we can get it over with, I'm sick of all these arguments between Tobey and us." Mr. Henderson said, then he told his wife to go get ready. After they got ready, they left and went to the pound to pick out a dog.
They got into the building with a huge sign that said "DOG ADOPTION." They got in the building and started walking down the aisle with cages and single dogs in it. The cages were attached to the two walls. Each person looked at one side. Mrs. Henderson finished first because some of the cages that she was suppose to look at was empty. So she went and helped Mr. Henderson look. They looked past about another 5 cages.
"Look honey." They both said at the same time when they saw a brown baby dog that looked like a German Shepherd, "it's" eyes stuck out from its face, and the nose stuck out most from the face. It stood behind the silver gate that was attach to the white cage wining for some attention, and for someone to let it out of the horrible small cage.
"He looks exactly like a baby Rooky." Mrs. Henderson said in amazement as if she had just seen a smaller version of Rooky.
Then a woman in a blue one pieced uniform and a hat that hides her shoulder length blond hair, she came up to Mr. and Mrs. Henderson and asked, "How can I help you?"
"Oh, we want to see this dog, we would like to adopt a dog for our son, Tobey because his dog just died and this one look exactly like his old one."
"Yeah, sure. I'm sure glad you came here, because if these dogs don'' get adopted soon, they might be put asleep. So you're welcome to take him. Here let me take him out for you." The lady who had blue eyes and was wearing the uniform said.
"Is it a he or a she? Does it have a name?" Mr. Henderson asked.
Then the lady, who was taking the dog out said, "Actually, we don't have a name for him because when we caught him he had no collar on, so you could name him yourself."
After the lady took the dog out of the cage, she tied a rope around his neck, but it wasn't to tight so he wouldn't choke. Then when they got in the car, Mr. Henderson took off the rope and gave it back to the lady. On their way home Mr. and Mrs. Henderson made up a name for the new dog. They decided to name the new dog Bibi.
They got home before Tobey woke up, so Mrs. Henderson went and gave Bibi a bath. By the time Tobey woke up, Bibi was all dried.
Tobey ran down the stairs like he did every morning, but this time he stopped half way through as he saw the baby brown dog standing at the bottom of the stairs and looking up at Tobey barking. "Rooky!"Tobey shouted as he ran down the rest of the stairs. He got to the dog and hugged it, as he jumped around with it in his arms.
"No Tobey, that's Bibi, not Rooky." His parents said as they came into the room.
Tobey saw his parents, then he softly set the dog back on the floor and ran over to his parents and hugged them, "We're glad you like him!" his dad said.
That day they decided to go to the park to have a picnic. They played and took pictures for a new album. This time they had Katy and her dog come along as a thank you.
