Dates to Remember
International Day May 3, 2002
On May 3, 2002, Schafer Park will celebrate International Day with the students during the day. Students will be encouraged by their teacher to share some specific informatin about their heritage. Thy may bring some special item to share and will also be asked to create a special picture about their heritage, which will be on display at the evening performance.
We will have the studnets performing in the evening beginning at 6:30 P.M. Following the performance we will have International Dessertss. Please bring your favorite homemade dessert to share. There will be no charge for the desserts. Punch and coffee will also be served.
Our Internatinal Dessert was a big success last year, so come and see the students perform and enjoy an excellent dessert. See you there.
Spring Concert for Fifth and Sixth grade Students.
On Monday, May 20, 2002, will be the Spring Concert for Upper Grade Students. It will begin at 7:00 P.M. Students need to report to their classroom at 6:40 P.M. so they can get ready to perform.
Arbor Day Celebration on May 16, 2002
The Schafer Park Community is cordially invited to celebrate National Arbor Day on Thursday, May 16, 2002 from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. The City of Hayward, Hayward Recreation and Park District and the Hayward Unified School District are working together to plan Hayward's Sixteenth consecutive tree planting ceremony.
Join Mayor Cooper and many city officials to help the students of Schafer Park in a special program at 10:00 A.M., followed by a special tree planting project where each classroom will plant their own special tree. There will be many special guests and special booths to add to the celebration. Please plan to join us. Parents are encouraged to bring a bag lunch and eat outside with their child during the lunch hour.
Standardized Testing in April and May
By the time you receive this newsletter, the standardized testing will almost be complete. Students have been taking the test for the last week and a half. The next eight days will be to complete tests and do make-up testing.
As stated in teh April newsletter, this testing is imortant and we want to thank parents for helping us by sending your child to school ready to perform their best. Thank you to the PTA for supplying a small snack to give students during the testing time.
The California Standards Test blueprints, showing what standards are addressed in each subject area tested can be found under "Standards and Assessment" on the California Department of Education (CDE) website at: http://www.cde.ca.gov/statetests/star/star.html on the Internet
Results will be sent individually to each student's home by mail sometime in the late summer or early fall.
Kindergarten registration Begins May 1, 2002
Registration for children who will start kindergarten in August for year-round schools, will begin on Wednesday May 1, 2002. According to State law, a child must have been born on or before December2, 1997 in order to enter kindergarten in the fall of 2002. (This also applies to students entering year-round school kindergartens in July)
The following information mus be presented at the time of registration.
Please call your school of residence for specific registration hours. Registration will continue through the last day of this school year.
PTA Officers for 2002-2003
PTA has now opened the offices for next school year. If you are interested or know of a person who would be willing to work as an officer on teh PTA Board, now is the time to nominate. The open positions are President and Membership. Nominations can be submitted anytime before the next PTA meeting on May 13, 2002, at 7:00 P.M. Please come and join us.
King Middle School Open House
On Tuesday, May 7, 2002, King Middle School will be having Open House at 7:00 P.M. Parents of sixth grade students are invited to a special orientation at 7:30 P.M. in the King School library.
